Say hello to Melty, everyone. He’s the latest entry in Custom Characters, a regular feature where I’ve been rolling out all of my custom vinyl figure creations.

Melty is the first figure I’ve added something other than paint to. The textured fur/sludge covering his body was actually crafted with a hot glue gun. Covering him up with that goop, his head in particular, felt very much like frosting a cupcake.

Melty was made from a Rose Art Color Blanks figure. After the hot glue, the usual acrylic paint and glossy finish were applied. Another contender for the custom figure throne!
It all started with the Munny. Months back, I knew I wanted to try my hand at a Munny figure. Since then I’ve discovered all sorts of other blank figures that I have had a blast turning into my very own “custom characters,” but I knew eventually I would have to return to the one who started it all.

And so while I was in town for the New York Comic Con I figured I would stop by the Kidrobot store and pay respect to the legend in person. Isn’t he pretty? Did you know that blue is my favorite color? The two of us talked for hours that night.
I told him that I’ve had a Mini Munny of my own for a little while now. I’ve simply been waiting for the right kind of inspiration to strike before tackling it. I promised the big guy I’d do my best to make him proud with it, and we left it at that.

It is still as blank as ever right here in my little hands, but it won’t be that way forever. I’ll make him pretty and share him with you when the time is right. I promise.
Welcome to an all new spook themed edition of Custom Characters, a regular feature where I’ve been showcasing the latest and greatest of my custom vinyl figure creations. Today I’d like to present to you a trio so creepy that they dare not go by any other name than Scary Skivvies.

There is much yet to be known about the Scary Skivvies. Are these their trick-or-treating outfits? Did Halloween fall on laundry day this year? Or are they just a care free group of fellows who simply enjoy showing off their well toned bodies? Whatever the case may be, I think it’s safe to say that Halloween won’t be the same this year… If these guys have anything to say about it.
The Scary Skivvies were made using Creatology Halloween Vinyl Decorating Toys with acrylic paint and a semi-gloss finish.

These sketchbook pages were supposed to be all free and breezy, but I’ll be darned if this strip didn’t take a heck of a lot of planning. Oh well. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out, and I’m sure they’ll become more off-the-cuff as I go.

I just wanted to send a quick shout out to everyone who stopped by at the recent New York Comic Con. It was quite a thing, wasn’t it? I got more of a chance to check out the show than I did last year, and the scope of it all really blew my mind. People… and stuff… EVERYWHERE! I know I was just one little speck in the sea of it all, so I really appreciate everyone who made it a point to drop by and say hello. So… Thanks!
Also, I’ve posted a bunch of photos of the show over on the Neil Jam facebook page.

In what feels like forever ago, I bought a sketchbook. I’ve never been a “sketchbook guy.” I tend to doodle and plan out “the Jam” mostly in whatever random line-ruled notebook that is within reach. The plan with the sketchbook was to try to get in the habit of creating comics on the fly, without having to rely on the same rigid setup and parameters I’ve been mired in since I initially learned how to do it way back when. As opposed to sitting at my table crafting out each strip steady-handedly on a sheet of bristol board, the sketchbook offers the opportunity to draw any type of comic, anywhere and at any time. I want to be more versatile, y’all.

I don’t intend to quit doing the traditional strips on bristol board. I’ve only just completed the first page in my sketchbook, so there is no telling how often I’ll be getting back to it or what kind of groove I’ll ultimately find myself in. The point I’m trying to make with all this is that if you see a new strip that doesn’t look like all the others you’ve seen so far, now you’ll know why.
